Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
Here is a brief update on what I learned about this hunting area tonight. Motels at Point Center, deer are plentiful, locals want them killed, take lots of ammo, they say still shots are rare, deer get chased with trucks and run for miles, farmers flush them with trucks, shoot and keep them moving. If you get a buck tag (most do) then you can buy up to 3 more doe tags for around $22 ea. Big sections, lots of places to hunt.
Ask if you have q's and I can get answers.

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
I say we get a room or two as close as we can. I am getting all my info from the local guys I have dinner with every tuesday eve. We meet and eat wild game and then have a game or two of pitch. They have been going for years and have shared the location with me that we talked about before. We will be hunting private land, BUTTTT, Kansas has what is called WIHA Walk in hunting allowed, you can just go in where ever you see these signs. Or we can obtain maps from the area DNR. The guys tell me hunter pressure in not an issue but like I said it is basically private land open to public to hunt. I will seee if they are going tomorrow night, they hunt with the drive and stand method. Basically flush the deer to the standers. I would prefer to still hunt early and late if the weather is good. No guarantees, but it might be a fun trip, they claim they see good bucks in the 150---160 range... Who knows?? But I am willing to give it a spinn.

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
JB, I think of the .25 cal the perfect Deer cartridge. Like you have heard me say to many times,, My ole 25-06 Wby has taken more than its share. I suppose in some cases a 300 world be a little better but for 400 yards and under I like the .25 with some velocity behind it. I remember a north Missouri 10 pointer I took across a beanfield at 315 yards. With an 85 grain bullet in my 25-06. He was facing away feeding so it was a quartering away shot from behind. The bullet entered breaking a rib then punched a 2" hole through the oposite shoulder. Bang - flop. Those loads were hot for a 25-06 about 3690 fps. I was laying on a creek bank soaking wet from the crawl in the creek to get as close as I could. It was a steady rest with no hold over. Very bad form though, that might have been this first case of Weatherby scope rash I ever got. But it sure wasn't the last..
I will ad that with a little more powder in my .257 or 257/300 I will choose a heavier bullet 110 probably. They should do an even betterjob. JMO...

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
Jeff,
Do you really think a .257 is enough for big whitetail? I guess if it is, you can add Mulies to that list too. My .257 seems to really like the 110 grain Accubonds at the range so that's what I'll stick with. I've never taken game with a .257 and all of my experience is with a .300 & a .340, and one whitetail with a .375 H&H.

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
I would chhoose a 25 of one sort or another. I still have a goal for a big Whitetail and I would feel best equiped with either a 25-06, .257 or if it earns the trust the .257-300.

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
How about minimum caliber of .460....that'd scare the hell out of the locals... Since you don't have one Ed, the .375 would do

Would you be offended if we put it up for a vote??
Not at all. I have a 375 if the 25 is not enough gun

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
Well, I hate to tell you all but I screwed up.. Ya know .. they just can't make it easy. While reading through all the technical crap and rules I got the impression there were two gun seasons. Well there is but the Oct season is only in Unit 19. The season for where we wanted to hunt is in December. The area 19 is right by Kansascity and It will be a zoo I am sure. So, My appologies. It was a good thought.

I am indeed interested if you have room.
You know you are welcome to come, in fact I very much think all 4 of us would have a great time. I will find out more on the stuff I mentioned hopefully today or tomorrow.
As for a theme.... I hope to be shooting a certain 257-300 if not a 5 panel .257...

Re: 2008 Kansas Deer Hunt
Your tag is good for one unit and an adjacent unit. So we would be in unit 3 and 7 if I read correctly.
