An over/under, pump, or semi-auto just doesn't feel right when you hold on to the barrels Obviously, you would have serious problems if you tried this with any type of sawed off shotgun!!! You may not have to worry about that "lead hand" anymore

Great post. I was just trying it on Bri'ghette. She mounts very smooth and seems to swing "freely".

Make Your Gun Feel Longer
Did you know that you can make your side-by-side feel longer than it really is? Maybe I discovered this out of necessity since I was never able to afford a bespoke gun until I bought my Merkel. If the length of pull on your SxS is, say, up to an inch too short, you can improve the feel by extending your forehand further along the barrels so that most, but not all, of your leading hand is grasping the barrels, while a small portion of the forend is left to fill the gap created by the cupping of your lead hand. Mounting your shotgun using this technique will make your leading arm extend as far as it naturally wants to and will bring the buttstock into your shoulder at the correct time and place. Experiment with your forehand placement until the mounting feels good then practice mounting and swinging until it becomes second nature. The opposite of this technique is also true, within reason. Take a gun that fits you perfectly or is a bit too long and bring your forehand closer to the action and see how that feels when mounting. Your gun should feel a bit too short.
This technique will only feel right when used with SxS guns. Leather gloves are worn to protect the hand from heat generated by the barrels and also to improve grip when holding onto the steel.
